Can You Pour Concrete in the Rain? Everything You Need to Know

After some record breaking weather in June, many parts of East Sussex and Kent have seen the return of heavy showers and sudden downpours. It's a reminder of just how unpredictable the British summertime can be.

One of the questions we're regularly asked at William The Concreter is:

"Can you pour concrete in the rain?"

The simple answer is yes, but it depends on the conditions.

Light rain isn't always a problem, but heavy rainfall at the wrong stage of the pour can affect the quality and finish of the concrete. Knowing when it's safe to pour, and when it's better to wait, can make all the difference.

Is It Safe to Pour Concrete in the Rain?

Concrete contains a carefully measured amount of water. This water is essential because it triggers the chemical reaction that allows the concrete to harden and gain strength.

If heavy rain falls onto freshly placed concrete before it has begun to set, it can add too much water to the surface.

This may lead to:

• A weaker surface finish

• Dusting or flaking over time

• Surface scaling

• Uneven curing

• Poor appearance

However, if the concrete has already begun to harden, a light shower is unlikely to cause any significant issues.

What About Summer Thunderstorms?

Summer often brings long periods of hot, dry weather followed by sudden thunderstorms.

This combination can actually create two different challenges.

Very hot weather can cause concrete to lose moisture too quickly, increasing the risk of surface cracking if it's not looked after properly.

Heavy rain shortly after placing concrete can then damage the surface before it has fully hardened.

That's why planning your pour around the forecast is always worthwhile.

Can Concrete Be Covered?

Yes.

If unexpected rain arrives during or shortly after a pour, fresh concrete can often be protected using plastic sheeting or waterproof covers.

The important thing is to avoid allowing the covering to touch the finished surface, as this can leave marks or affect the finish.

For larger commercial projects, experienced contractors will often have contingency plans in place if rain is forecast.

Should I Cancel My Concrete Delivery If Rain Is Forecast?

Not necessarily.

The forecast may predict showers, but that doesn't automatically mean your pour needs to be postponed.

A brief shower is very different from prolonged heavy rainfall.

Before making any decisions, it's always worth speaking to your concrete supplier or contractor. They'll consider:

• How heavy the rain is expected to be

• When it's forecast to arrive

• The size of your project

• Whether the concrete can be protected after placing

In many cases, the work can still go ahead safely.

Hot Weather Can Be Just as Challenging

While rain often gets the attention, very hot weather can present just as many challenges.

During the recent June heatwave, many concrete pours across the South East had to be carefully managed to prevent the surface drying too quickly.

High temperatures can:

• Speed up setting times

• Increase moisture loss

• Make finishing more difficult

• Increase the risk of shrinkage cracks if the concrete isn't cured correctly

Good preparation and experienced handling are just as important in hot weather as they are in wet weather.
